Space is the most honest language of culture.
The beauty of campus culture design lies in its subtle yet pervasive message, devoid of didacticism. A weathered old wall preserved within a brand-new teaching building is not a design oversight, but rather an expression of our appreciation for the marks left by time. The row of freely movable seats by the window serves not only as flexibility but also as an invitation to free interaction.
Shanghai Culture has always believed that good design should be like a good poem, using the most refined "spatial language" to express the deepest cultural core.
This kind of expression requires a systematic approach to campus culture development. Culture is not an isolated exhibit, but should permeate the entire spatial system like air. From the tranquility of the library to the bustle of the activity center, from the hurried pace of the corridors to the languid atmosphere of the rest area, every atmosphere should be supported by a unified cultural logic. This logic is not rigid rules, but a warm consensus—about how this school views learning, growth, and interpersonal relationships.
Truly vibrant cultures often emerge unplanned. When considering campus space design, we place particular emphasis on details that foster unexpected encounters:
In the sky bridge connecting the two buildings, we designed a slightly protruding "viewing platform". This place unexpectedly became the students' favorite gathering spot after class—to enjoy the scenery, chat, and naturally, exchanges took place.
The waiting area outside the teachers' office was transformed into a small book bar. While waiting, students might casually pick up a book or notice the teacher-recommended reading list displayed on the wall. Education continues to extend beyond the formal classroom.
Even in the outer area of the restrooms, we meticulously design a " flowing inspiration wall"—a wipeable wall where students can jot down their immediate thoughts. Some of the most brilliant sentences often originate here.
These seemingly casual designs actually reflect the deepest understanding of campus life. Culture is not something to be worshipped, but rather something that grows naturally in the gaps of daily life.
Shanghai Culture Planning: Translators of Time, Not Mere Builders
In our practice at Shanghai Culture, we position ourselves as "translators of time." Every school is a book being written, with its past, present, and future. Our task is not to create new chapters out of thin air, but to understand its unique context and then, through campus space design, ensure that every page of the space can be read and felt.
We often work with the school to find those "cultural relics"—it might be a slice of an old tree ring, inlaid on the screen of the new auditorium; it might be the handwritten notes of the first graduating class, enlarged and printed on the decorative wall of the professional classroom; or it might be a certain color that is the school's signature, extracted and repeatedly appearing in various spaces in different concentrations and materials.
These relics are more powerful than any slogan. They are silent, yet they speak of "who we are" and "where we come from." Today's students, surrounded by these "past" events, learn and live, naturally becoming part of the tradition and leaving their own mark on the times. Space, in this way, becomes a witness to and bearer of the flow of time.
Shanghai Culture Planning – We focus on understanding the unique pulse of each school and, through professional campus culture design and space creation, transform abstract concepts into tangible and immersive everyday environments. Let us work together to create spaces where culture can breathe naturally and memories can reside peacefully.
